Supervision: Tutors work under the guidance of the Program Director and program staff, following both written and verbal program procedures and instructional expectations.

Role Overview

Key Responsibilities

Academic Tutoring & Student Support

  • Provide individualized or small-group tutoring aligned with assigned subject areas.
  • Strengthen foundational knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Guide students in study strategies, time management, and learning habits.
  • Foster a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity and persistence.

Student Progress & Communication

  • Maintain accurate records of sessions, learning plans, and progress.
  • Communicate academic updates with staff, school personnel, and families.
  • Monitor student growth and adjust tutoring strategies as needed.

Program Participation & Improvement

  • Participate in tutor meetings, professional learning, and training workshops.
  • Contribute ideas and feedback to strengthen the tutoring program.
  • Help improve student engagement and academic outcomes.

Professional Conduct

  • Conduct sessions in designated locations and during scheduled times.
  • Maintain a professional, respectful, and encouraging demeanor.
  • Protect student confidentiality and comply with program policies.

Who Can Apply

Tutor Qualification Pathways

ILC hires tutors at two levels: Professional Tutors and Student Tutors.

Professional Tutor

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area
  • Teaching certification preferred (STEM or literacy)
  • Demonstrated expertise in the content area
  • Three professional references
  • Completion of program orientation and tutor training

Preferred

  • Classroom teaching experience
  • Experience with K–12 students
  • Project-based learning or STEM instruction experience

Student Tutor

High school or college students welcome.

College Student Tutors

  • • At least one semester at an accredited college/university
  • • Minimum GPA: 2.5
  • • Grade of A or B in the subject area being tutored

High School Student Tutors

  • • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • • Grade of A or B in the subject area being tutored

All Student Tutors

  • Two recommendations from teachers or administrators
  • Completion of tutor training and program orientation
  • Demonstrated communication and leadership skills

  • Explains concepts clearly with strong content knowledge
  • Patience, adaptability, and encouragement
  • Organization and attention to documentation
  • Commitment to student growth and success

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with online tutoring platforms
  • Familiarity with collaborative digital tools
  • Ability to support project-based learning

Schedule

Flexible hours based on student scheduling and program needs.

Compensation

$20–$25

per hour
